Odor interactions and learning in a model of the insect antennal lobe

چکیده
We present a new model of insect antennal lobe in the form of integro-di-erential equation with short-range inhibition. The learning in the model modi0es the odor-dependent input by adding a term that is proportional to the 0ring rates of the network in the pre-learning steady state. We study the modi0cation of odor-induced spatial patterns (steady states) by combination of odors (binary mixtures) and learning. We show that this type of learning applied to the inhibitory network “increases the contrast” of the network’s spatial activity patterns. We identify pattern modi0cations that could underlie insect behavioral phenomena. c © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A network model for learning-induced changes in odor representation in the antennal lobe
The antennal lobe (AL) is the insect homologue of the olfactory bulb in mammals. As such, it is the first processing station in the insect olfactory system. It has been shown previously that odorant representations change during associative odor learning [1], but contradictory findings have also been published [2]. We recorded Ca-activity of uniglomerular projection neurons (PNs) in the AL of t...

Honey bees have a rich repertoire of olfactory learning behaviors, and they therefore are an excellent model to study plasticity in olfactory circuits. Recent behavioral, physiological, and molecular evidence suggested that the antennal lobe, the first relay of the olfactory system in insects and analog to the olfactory bulb in vertebrates, is involved in associative and nonassociative olfactor...
متن کاملMultiple sites of associative odor learning as revealed by local brain microinjections of octopamine in honeybees.
In a classical conditioning procedure, honeybees associate an odor with sucrose resulting in the capacity of the odor to evoke an appetitive response, the extension of the proboscis (PER). Here, we study the effects of pairing an odor with injections of octopamine (OA) as a substitute for sucrose into three putative brain sites of odor/sucrose convergence. OA injected into the mushroom body (MB...
متن کاملRole of GABAergic inhibition in shaping odor-evoked spatiotemporal patterns in the Drosophila antennal lobe.
Drosophila olfactory receptor neurons project to the antennal lobe, the insect analog of the mammalian olfactory bulb. GABAergic synaptic inhibition is thought to play a critical role in olfactory processing in the antennal lobe and olfactory bulb. However, the properties of GABAergic neurons and the cellular effects of GABA have not been described in Drosophila, an important model organism for...
متن کاملSpatial and temporal organization of ensemble representations for different odor classes in the moth antennal lobe.
In the insect antennal lobe, odor discrimination depends on the ability of the brain to read neural activity patterns across arrays of uniquely identifiable olfactory glomeruli. Less is understood about the complex temporal dynamics and interglomerular interactions that underlie these spatial patterns. Using neural-ensemble recording, we show that the evoked firing patterns within and between g...
